Senior Citizens Casino Cruises

Senior citizens like to gamble. The easier it is for them to get to a casino or other gambling establishment, the more often they go. In a 2001 research study, senior citizens admitted that the reason they enjoy gambling is for the social outing. Indeed, the same survey stated that the number one social outing enjoyed by senior citizens is a gambling day trip.

For this reason, casino cruises are especially popular with senior citizens. Some of the cruises provide transportation to the port, and the outing is only a few hours long. Senior citizens tend to prefer the early cruise, rather than the evening cruises that can run into the wee hours of the morning.

Catering to Senior Citizens
Casino cruise lines understand who make up a large portion of their clientele, particularly in the southern states where senior citizens have either retired permanently or live for part of the year.

The Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, casino cruise ship, Southern Elegance, declared Tuesday and Thursday to be Senior Citizens Special days. On the morning cruise those two days each week, senior citizens get $10 in tokens and a free brunch, plus free transportation.

The Florida casino cruises also offer special deals to their senior citizen passengers. If there is a boarding fee, senior citizens are usually provided with a discount.

Of course, the casino cruises aren’t a hit only with seniors in the south. Anywhere there is a gambling day trip, senior citizens will show up. Casino cruises on riverboats, of the Northeast coast, and in the Gulf of Mexico are all very popular with the over 55 crowd.

A Mixed Blessing
Although senior citizens are among the most ardent gamblers, they are in the least stable position to do so, financially and emotionally. Many seniors gamble from loneliness, particularly after the death of a spouse. A senior citizen who has suffered from memory issues may not realize how much money has been gambled.

However, if senior citizens are determined to gamble, casino cruises are probably their best option. The cruises are within a specified amount of time, and on most casino cruises, the ship will not open the game rooms within a specified amount of time or distance of leaving or entering the port. So a five-hour gambling cruise involves closer to three hours of gambling. And the limited space gives seniors more opportunity to mingle and socialize, which, after all, is why they claim they are at a casino in the first place.
