What Is a Poker Cruise?

Filed under : Cruise Types, Hot Topics

Most casino cruises offer a variety of games to gamble. But with the popularity of poker escalating, some cruise lines are using it to their advantage by offering poker cruises. In a way, poker cruises return the game of poker to its roots. It was a game invented on Mississippi River steamboats, as passengers sailed from one port city to another.

What Is a Poker Cruise?
Simply put, a poker cruise is a regular cruise where poker is the main form of entertainment on board. The cruise itself is usually about a week long and sails to different ports, most of them in the Caribbean. (The poker rooms are closed during the times the ship is docked in port.)

The cruises are geared for all players, beginners and experts alike. While the ship is at sea, the poker rooms sponsor tournaments, such as a no-limit Texas Hold ‘em tournament. There are buy-in charges to enter the tournaments. These charges range from $120 to $230, depending on the type of tournament and when it is held.

Cruise ships are “cash-free,” meaning that all charges are put on the ship card and billed to a credit card at the end of the cruise. However, cash is necessary in the poker rooms. Be warned that the ATM machine on board usually runs out of cash early in the cruise. Travelers’ checks can be cashed in the poker room. The casino only is able to cash personal checks for a fee that is charged to the ship card.

Who Can Play Poker?
Anyone who is at least 18 years old is allowed to be in the poker rooms. Poker players of any skill level are invited to play. Although beginners may not want to partake in the tournaments, all players can find poker games with people at a similar skill level.

Poker cruises attract travelers from around the world. The cruise is an opportunity for patrons to meet new people and get plenty of poker tips. Cruise goers are encouraged to get to know their fellow passengers.

What Type of Poker Is Played?
The poker rooms offer tournaments in Texas Hold ‘em and regular games of Omaha poker. However, any type of poker game will be offered at the request of the players.
