Carnival Valor Casino Cruise Review

At nearly 1,000 feet long and carrying 2,974 passengers, the Carnival Valor is a large casino cruise ship. With a weight of 110,000 tons, the Valor is not the largest cruise ship on the water, but she is still quite impressive when you first see and board her. Put into service in 2004 and renovated in 2008, the Valor represents state of the art cruise ships. While no cruise ship is perfect, this one does a nice job of trying to be.

This ship has enough “wow” factor to impress most guests.

You enter the ship at the bottom of a multiple level atrium that is lit by interior lighting and an enormous decorative skylight many floors above you. Glass backed elevators soar up and down their shafts adding to the decor of the atrium and furnishing guests with a great view of the ship as they ride up and down. The size of the Valor gives her enough room to offer many large open guests areas so that the ship rarely seems crowded.

You do not have to worry about getting a balcony with an obstructed view.

When booking cruise staterooms, guests are often given the opportunity to opt for a lesser price by taking whatever room the cruise line selects for them. The problem with this is that it is normally the way that cruise lines get guests to accept an obstructed view. However, the Carnival Valor does not have any balcony staterooms with obstructed view. This allows customers who choose the lower cost option to do so with confidence that they will still have an excellent view from their cabin.

Carnival Valor has most of the amenities that you seek on a casino cruise.

Wave pools and rock climbing walls are relatively recent introductions to the cruise industry. So, you will not find them on the Valor. However, with three swimming pools, a great spa, tennis courts, and a giant top deck television, you probably will not miss them. Like almost every cruise ship, the Valor has a large fitness area with most of the equipment found in modern gyms. It also has walking and running tracks on the upper decks. The casino is filled with every sort of gaming and slot machines. From end to end on the decks where activities are found, there are plenty of bars for purchasing soft drinks and adult beverages.

The food is good but not great.

While the type and quality of the food is largely a food service and not a specific ship issue, the food on the Carnival Valor is good. The steaks are cooked as ordered most of the time. The tenderness of the meat and seafood is not quite what you would expect in a restaurant that operates with the appearance of four or five star dining. There are normally plenty of appetizers, entrees, and desserts from which to choose. If you prefer, you can eat at the buffet on the Lido deck instead of the dining room. You will still have plenty of choices. The buffet has the advantage of letting you pick and choose from food that you can see before you select it. You might choose to frequent the deli, pizza, or fast food type servers on the ship.

Room service is available on the Valor.

For those who have a good reason to hang out in their room, room service is also an option. The menu for room service is limited. This is especially true for breakfast and lunch or at non-meal times. However, it is delivered promptly. Plan on giving the person delivering the meal a tip of a couple of dollars. It is hard to beat ordering a light breakfast for a sunrise delivery. Carry it out to your balcony and enjoy the feel of the ocean air while dining as the sun rises over the horizon.

The level of service on the Valor is excellent.

High levels of service are the hallmark of most cruise lines. The Carnival Valor does not disappoint. The state rooms are cleaned at least twice per day. The cabin attendants are usually inconspicuous. By use of the ship’s phone system, almost every other need can be resolved from your stateroom.

Generally, all of the staff was found to be friendly, courteous, and helpful.

By the second night, the wait staff in the dining room had learned the drink preferences of the diners and recalled their names. The ship’s cleaning crew does of nice job of keeping everything looking pristine without being constantly underfoot.

Shore excursions tend to be the standard fare for cruise ships.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. The Valor offers numerous options for shore activities at every port. The prices tend to range from moderate to expensive depending on the wants of the guests. Carnival tends to have the excursions well organized and works to assure the safety of its guests. Getting on and off of the ship is generally smooth and has minimal delays.
